We asked Sam, front man and brains of band, No Teeth, some questions...

Updated: Oct 24, 2023

How did the name No Teeth come about?

A long time ago, we dipped into a dream. Whilst eating an apple we noticed our teeth had loosened and turned wobbly, we could not help but tug at them until they all came out. After, we proceeded to arrange them neatly in front of us on the carpet, creating endless patterns and shapes. This seemed like a significant vision, and thus became a namesake for the group.

Sum up your sound in 3 words

Not very musical

Is ‘Meat Night’ a metaphor for something else?

The story described in "Everything's Better Than Meat Night" is one of utter debauchery. It is a metaphor for derailment, chaos and loosing yourself to the decadence that humanity is all too easily led astray with. I think a lot of our songs are about this theme, its almost like we are offering an apology.

If not, what inspired this peculiar topic?

Although it does represent something metaphorical, it's also based on a true story. One that actually happened. No clues given, the lyrics are easy to follow.

Tips for anyone wanting to take up the trumpet?

It's a very easy instrument if you don't know what you're doing. Make sure you always practice in the dead of night, the local residents really enjoy being awoken to the luscious sound of a budding horn player practicing their dissonant rendition of "Spanish Flea".

What comes first the riffs or the lyrics?

Very much depends, a lot of the lyrics are premeditated but not necessarily assigned to any particular song, we just wait for a song that the lyrics fit alongside. Other times the song is fully formed before we can make any judgement on what it's lyrics might represent.

Chicken or the egg?

A chicken, when corn fed, will provide its farmer with fresh eggs almost every day.

Any exciting No Teeth gossip we can look forward to?

We have a lot in the works. The syndicate is in the process of producing its first album, for one. It will be a temperamental release that compiles all of our hottest material from all of our years of causing Nuisance. 2 of the tracks on this session are unreleased numbers that you can expect to hear on the album. We're also hoping to tour with our good friends in the Richard Carlson Band this summer. Amongst other things.

When is your next gig?

The 12th of May we headline The Cumberland Arms alongside some seminal musicians.

If you had to add two musicians to the clan, famous and local, who would you choose?

Local hero Jimmy Nail would be a great addition to the roster, his strong, butchers arms and crooked nose could be a great asset to the syndicates new endeavours. And Gazza, purely for the sex appeal.

Dream band to support?

I think they're all dead now.

Words to entice our fellow followers into watching your live session?

Before doing anything to entice, the syndicate is required to issue a legal disclaimer. We are under no circumstances encouraging viewers to enjoy our music, in fact to do so is a prosecutable offence. Resist the urge to get caught in the bad news, take it all in and then quickly withdraw from the experience. It is the only way to live with yourself.
